While the state of Kentucky is sure exactly where they stand on gambling, the problem was one of the most talked recent legislative session.
Last week, lawmakers voted against a proposal from House Speaker Greg Stumbo that called for video lottery terminals at racetracks in the state. It was a plan that was thought up to help a struggling horse racing industry.
That this plan was not successful does not mean anything in the big scheme of things in Kentucky. Some lawmakers believe that the issue will be revisited at a later time, perhaps by summer.
“As we go down this road, budget cuts are going to get tougher and tax increase to get wider,” said Nick Nicholson, president of Keeneland Race Course in Lexington
State had an eventful year gambling problem in 2008. First, the governor of the state tried to seize the domain names of 141 gambling online sites. He succeeded at first, just to have an appeal Court rule that he could not refer name.
After that, talk about expanded gambling at race tracks has become the central state. Lawmakers in favor of expanded gambling have yet to propose a plan that was accepted by their politicians.
